The Heart of the Righteous
The people whom the LORD calls “righteous” are neither timid nor fearful when it comes to confronting ideas and behaviors that go against God’s Word, His wisdom, His instructions, and His truths about life. Their hearts are drawn deeply to God’s own heart, and they earnestly desire not only to know what He says—but to hide His Word within their hearts.
As Psalm 37:30–31 declares: “The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue speaks of justice. The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slip.”
These righteous ones possess certain characteristics that set them apart. What makes them truly unique is what’s rooted in their heart—they seek to weave God’s Word into the very fabric of their being, not merely to know God’s heart intellectually, but to live it out completely. Their hearts become the wellspring for how they live, think, plan, speak, and engage with others. This truth is reflected in God’s instruction to Joshua:
Joshua 1:8–9 “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it… Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
God created the heart as the core of our being—the source of all true motivation. Those called righteous by God understand this and respond when He urges them to keep His Word in their hearts, on their lips, and throughout their lives. When this happens, the righteous speak with wisdom and justice. And even if people disagree, they cannot deny that the righteous have spoken from the heart of God into the matters of the world around them.
To remain silent in the face of evil is to allow it to prevail. Edmund Burke famously said: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” He went on to warn: “When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.” God is calling His righteous to courageously speak His wisdom and His justice into the world. If they do not, then darkness has space to grow.
A Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, I confess that my heart is entangled with many things that oppose Your Word and Your heart. Please help me. Reweave my heart so that Your Word becomes its core fabric. I ask for Your courage to empower me—to speak Your wisdom and Your justice when confronted with evil. Amen.
