Tuning Your Life to the Spirit: Hearing God’s Voice Like John
In Revelation 1, John writes that he was “in the Spirit” on the Lord’s Day. This wasn’t just a mystical experience—it was a posture of heart, mind, and life that every follower of Christ can cultivate. It’s a spiritual alignment that allows us to hear the voice of God in ways that transcend mere words.
Over the past several days, I’ve been reflecting on what John meant by “in the Spirit” and how it connects with Isaiah’s description of the fullness of the Spirit given to us through Christ
(Isaiah 11:2). Together, these passages reveal how we can tune every frequency of our lives to the Spirit—so we can hear God’s voice more clearly and definitively.
Consider an Untuned Piano
When a piano is out of tune, even someone without any experience in music will instinctively know that it just doesn’t sound right. When you press a key, the note doesn’t ring out clean—it might sound too sharp, like it’s biting, or too flat, like it’s sighing. Some notes buzz faintly others feel heavy and dull. Play a chord, and instead of blending together smoothly, the notes fight each other. It’s like listening to two different songs at the same time…you may love each song individually, but together they make no sense.
It’s not broken, but it’s definitely not right. Such is our life, and the effects of our actions, when not in tune with the Spirit of God. It flails and desperately tries to find harmony, but it can’t and it won’t. Like any instrument, our lives must be tuned to resonate with the Spirit.
Six Ways to Tune Your Life to the Spirit
Here are six key adjustments I’m learning to make:
- Acknowledge the Lord’s Leadership
Trust Him. Commit to follow Him wholeheartedly. - Seek and Apply His Wisdom
Pursue understanding of His ways and apply His wisdom to every response—mind, heart, and life. - Surrender Your Decision-Making
Turn your daily choices over to the Lord’s wisdom alone. Reject competing influences. - Pray for His Counsel
Seek the Lord in prayer to discover His perspective on every area of life. - Rely on His Strength
Don’t depend on your own willpower. Lean on His strength to walk in His ways and reject what’s out of tune. - Revere His Word and Spirit
Let every thought, word, and action reflect a growing reverence for who God is, what He’s done, and what He’s promised—especially through Jesus Christ.
A Prayer for Spiritual Clarity
Dear Lord, thank You for making it clearer through Your Word how I may hear Your voice as John did on Patmos. I now understand why You’ve sometimes seemed silent in my life. Forgive me, and be my Helper and Strength as I bring every part of my life into tune with Your Spirit—so I may know Your voice more clearly every day.
