Living the Purpose God Planned for You
Paul ends his letter to the Colossians with a personal encouragement to Archippus, the son of his dear friend Philemon: “Tell Archippus: ‘See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in the Lord.’” — Colossians 4:17
When we come to a sincere trust in Christ, our lives are made new—and with that newness comes a new purpose. This is the “ministry you have received in the Lord” that Paul reminds Archippus about. And today, these words reach forward to remind us too. Everyone who has received the merciful grace of Jesus has also received a calling—a purpose designed by our Father in Heaven before we were born.
Before turning to Christ, our purpose was shaped by temporary things—things that didn’t consider the eternal wisdom and love of God. But when we surrender to Him, our lives are reshaped. We begin to realize that we were created with a unique, personal ministry. God’s plans for us are not random—they are intentional and full of hope: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” — Jeremiah 29:11
His purposes are His way of uniquely blessing each of us with wisdom and discernment—leading us to the true meaning and eternal significance we were created for. There is no other way to lasting, eternal good.
A Prayer of Surrender to God’s Purpose
Dear Lord Jesus, this lesson cuts deep. I’ve spent so much of my life following self-determined purposes instead of the ones Your loving grace designed for me. I pray for my heart, mind, body, and soul to seek Your purposes for the rest of my life. May I bring You joy as You see me follow Your ways—ways that lead to the future and hope You planned for me long ago. Amen.
