Ezra, Nehemiah, and the Call to Be “All In”

A Divine Assignment and God’s Sovereignty Ezra and Nehemiah were uniquely chosen by God to lead the restoration of Jerusalem—its temple, walls, and community. Through their lives, we see God’s sovereign hand at work. He not only placed a divine burden on their hearts, but also stirred the hearts of pagan kings to support their mission. This partnership between divine purpose and human willingness is a powerful reflection of how God orchestrates provision alongside calling.

God’s Heart for All People God’s desires are vast, holy, and righteous—but central among them is this: He longs for every person to know Him and His ways. As Jesus wept over Jerusalem in Matthew 23:37, He cried out:

“How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, yet you were not willing!”

Willingness matters. Our hearts must not only be open to God’s desires—but actively responsive.

The Willingness to Be Changed Paul echoes God’s universal desire in 1 Timothy 2:1–4, where we’re reminded:

“God our Savior desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Yet for that to take root, we must surrender our will to His. That surrender opens the door for growth, maturity, and alignment with His eternal purposes.

Growing into God’s Calling Once we yield our will to the Father, He leads us to mature in our walk:

“Grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ…” (Ephesians 4:15)

We begin to walk in the plans He has for us—plans full of purpose, hope, and restoration (Jeremiah 29:11).

The Example of Ezra Ezra’s story reveals a vital key to being used by God:

“Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.” (Ezra 7:10)

Ezra didn’t just receive a calling—he prepared himself for it. He sought God’s Word, lived it, and taught it. His life reflects the kind of readiness God looks for.

A Call to Prepare and Participate If we want to participate in God’s work as Ezra and Nehemiah did, we too must prepare our hearts, seek His Word, live His truth, and share it with others. Without that preparation, we risk missing the miraculous works God desires to do in and through our lives—works that may even move nations and communities.

“You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)

The Key: An “All In” Heart Ezra and Nehemiah had hearts that were fully surrendered—ALL IN. They lived in tune with God’s Word and allowed it to shape how they thought, acted, and led. Their lives became living instruction for those around them.

A Closing Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, As I reflect on the lives of Ezra and Nehemiah, I recognize how far I still have to go. I long for that kind of all-in surrender. Holy Spirit, help me see the places in my life where I’m holding back. Stir my heart. Teach me to seek Your Word, to live it boldly, and to lead others toward Your promises. May I be closer to “all in” today than I was yesterday—and tomorrow, closer still. Amen.
