Devotion: The Knowledge of the Truth

Devotion: The Knowledge of the Truth

Yesterday, 1 Timothy 2:3-4 (“God our Savior… desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”) compelled me to look at the references noted in my Bible relative to this “knowledge of the truth.” These verses were:

  • 2 Timothy 3:5–7 (…always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.)
  • Hebrews 10:26–27 (If we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins…)
  • Proverbs 1:7 (The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.)

I asked Copilot for a Devotion based on these verses—AMAZING what I received back! Here it is.

A Thread of Divine Urgency

There’s a thread running through these verses—a divine urgency about truth. Not just any truth, but the truth: the truth of God’s holiness, our need for salvation, and the transforming power of Christ.

God desires all to be saved—this is the heartbeat of heaven. His longing is not for religious performance, but for genuine relationship. Salvation is not just escape from judgment; it’s entrance into truth. And truth, in Scripture, is not merely factual—it’s spiritual, relational, and moral. It’s knowing Jesus, who is the truth (John 14:6).

Learning Without Surrender

But 2 Timothy 3 warns us: not all learning leads to truth. Some are “always learning” yet remain spiritually blind. Why? Because truth demands surrender. These verses describe people enslaved by sin and impulses, who resist transformation. They may appear religious, but they deny its power. They’re captivated—not by Christ, but by deception.

The Warning in Hebrews

Then comes the sobering warning in Hebrews 10. Once someone receives the knowledge of the truth and willfully chooses sin, they reject the very sacrifice that could save them. This isn’t about stumbling—it’s about rebellion. The result? Not indifference, but judgment. A “fury of fire” awaits those who trample grace.

The Beginning of Knowledge

And Proverbs 1:7 brings it full circle: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Reverence is the doorway to truth. Without it, we become fools—despising wisdom, instruction, and ultimately, salvation.

Heart Check

This devotion calls us to examine our hearts:

  • Are we pursuing truth or just information?
  • Are we surrendered to Christ or merely curious about Him?
  • Do we fear the Lord in a way that leads to wisdom—or do we treat His Word lightly?

God’s desire is clear: He wants you to be saved. He wants you to know the truth. But that truth must change you. It must lead to repentance, reverence, and renewal.

Prayer

Lord, I don’t want to be someone who’s always learning but never arriving. I want to know You—the Truth that sets me free. Help me to walk in reverent fear, to treasure Your Word, and to live a life that reflects Your holiness. Keep me from deception, and draw me deeper into Your truth. Amen.
