God’s Greatest Desire

This week I’ve been soaking in Hebrews 9–13. From a 30,000-foot view, it all boils down to one breathtaking truth:

Almighty God’s greatest desire is for us to have a personal relationship with Him.

His absolute holiness and righteousness—without which we could never be eternally safe with Him—require us to be holy and righteous as well. Yet God, as our Father, knows something essential about us: We will never be able to become this on our own.

An Impossible Cleanup—Unless God Acts

We need to be cleaned up. But this cleanup is impossible… Unless God does something eternally miraculous. Hebrews reminds us again and again that this miracle came through the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

The Cost We Can Never Fully Comprehend

We can never fully grasp the significance of what was accomplished through His suffering:

The blood running down from the lashes on His back…
down His brow…
flowing from the holes in His hands and feet…
poured out from His side…
and sealed by His ultimate death.

What this eternally provides for us—forever and ever—is beyond our ability to comprehend.

Love Proven by Sacrifice

If we even begin to appreciate what He has done, we begin to see something unmistakably clear: His greatest desire is that we would run to Him—jump into His lap—and call Him Father. This is the heart of Hebrews: access, nearness, cleansing, and confidence before a holy God because of Jesus.

The Beginning of Our Response

The beginning of our response is simple, though not easy:

  • Turning away from what displeases Him
  • Honoring what does please Him

God knows this journey is step by step. He knows we won’t get it perfect. What pleases Him is not perfection—but sincere, humble effort.

Living Out the Greatest Love

And as we grow in this relationship, we should never miss an opportunity to let others know about the greatest love ever shown.

The love that cleanses. The love that restores. The love that invites us to call the Almighty God Father.

A Closing Reflection

Lord, may I never lose awe over what You have done. May Your sacrifice shape how I turn from what displeases You and pursue what honors You. Thank You for meeting me in my weakness, for cleaning what I could never clean, and for desiring a relationship with me more than I could ever imagine. Teach me to live grateful, humble, and bold—sharing the greatest love ever known.
