The Deep Place of Thought: Listening to the Spirit Within
In Psalm 64, David opens his heart to God about the thoughts that trouble him—those that keep him awake at night and distract him during the day. In verse 6, he writes:
“Both the inward thought and the heart of a man are deep.”
— Psalm 64:6
David understood that our thoughts are not just fleeting ideas—they define who we truly are and shape the lives we actually live. It’s likely that David passed this insight on to his son Solomon, who later wrote:
“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
— Proverbs 23:7
This verse underscores the power of thought. Our character and actions are deeply influenced by our inner beliefs and intentions.
Taking Every Thought Captive
Paul echoes this truth in his letter to the Corinthians:
“We demolish arguments and every proud thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.”
— 2 Corinthians 10:5
These verses speak to me profoundly. They’re not just about mental discipline—they’re a call to spiritual vigilance. They warn us to be discerning about the people we associate with, and even more so, about the intentions within our own hearts.
Where the Spirit Speaks
Our thoughts and intentions are the core of who we are at any moment. And this is precisely where the Holy Spirit dwells. When I listen to the still, small voice in my heart—that whisper of God’s Spirit offering direction, correction, discernment, wisdom, and conviction—I’m given a choice: to take that thought captive and obey Christ… or not.
A Prayer of Trust and Obedience
Dear Lord Jesus,
These verses sting—and comfort.
For as long as I’m aware of Your Spirit’s direction, correction, and wisdom, I know it’s Your grace drawing me to Your loving truth.
Help me to trust and obey.
Help me to take every thought captive.
And help me to live from the deep place where Your Spirit speaks.
