Just as there are laws of science that we must respect for our own good and protection, there are also laws for life—given by God in His Word—that we must honor for the same reason. If we ignore the law of gravity, harm will surely come to us. To know and respect the laws of science is wise. But even more vital are the laws of life that God has lovingly provided.

David learned this truth through painful experience. In 1 Kings 2:1–4, David pleads with his son Solomon, urging him to walk in God’s ways:

“…and observe what the Lord requires: Walk in His ways, and keep His decrees and commands, His laws and requirements, as is written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go, and that the Lord may keep His promise to me, ‘If your descendants watch how they live and if they walk faithfully before Me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’”

David knew firsthand that stepping outside of God’s wisdom and instruction left him vulnerable. The enemy is always waiting just beyond the boundaries of God’s protection. As Genesis 4:7 warns:

“…sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.”

God gives us clear instructions in His Word—His “laws of life”—to help us fend off sin and walk in His protection. Just as scientific laws cannot be changed or ignored without consequence, so too with God’s Word. Its truths are eternal, and ignoring them brings spiritual consequences. David’s final words are a heartfelt plea for his son to remain faithful to God’s ways, knowing it will take courage and divine help. Because living by God’s laws is not easy—and it cannot be done without His help through Christ and the Holy Spirit, who dwells in those who trust in Him.

Just as we seek to understand and respect the laws of science, we must also seek to know and revere the laws of life that God has given us in His Word. These laws are not only real—they are eternal.

A Prayer for Reverence and Help

Dear Lord, You have persistently proven that there are laws of life even more real than the laws of science—because they are eternal. Yet so often, I have failed to give these laws the reverence they deserve. Thank You for covering me with Your grace that saves me from myself. Help me to know the truths of Your laws of life as deeply and tangibly as the laws of science—more so, because of their eternal significance. Amen.
