Returning to the Cycle of Protection: Trust, Seek, Follow
Without the sovereign protection of the Lord, life is left exposed to the schemes of the enemy—Satan and his forces, who seek only to destroy all that is righteous and holy. This is the sobering message that opens the book of Zephaniah. Because people rejected God’s instructions for protection, they became vulnerable to destructive patterns and deceitful systems of their own making.
In Zephaniah 1:6, God makes it clear how simple it is to remain under His covering: “those who turn back from following the Lord and neither seek the Lord nor inquire of him.” His love for us is so great that He offers a straightforward path to safety—Follow Him, Seek Him, Inquire of Him. This forms a complete cycle of instruction and protection, one that strengthens us as we practice it daily.
Through His Spirit, God is always calling to us. The cycle begins when we turn away from whatever we’re currently following and choose to follow Him. This leads us to seek Him with all our heart, just as He promises in Jeremiah 29:13: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” When we truly seek Him, we begin to talk with Him about life—trusting that He leads us to what’s best. Then we return again to the “follow” part of the cycle, walking in His guidance.
Our lives must stand on these three legs—Trust Him, Seek Him, Follow Him—just like a three-legged stool depends on each leg for balance. Without them, we lose our foundation of relationship with the Lord. His love pleads with us to return: to follow Him, seek Him wholeheartedly, inquire of His ways, and walk in them.
A Prayer to Re-enter the Cycle
Lord, I break the cycle of protection and relationship with You more often than I realize. Make me aware of when I’m drifting, and help me step back into Your rhythm of grace. Teach me to follow You, seek You, and come to You with every concern and question. Give me the discipline and courage to stay in Your cycle of relationship and protection—so that I may know You more with every thought and decision I make. Amen.
